A Different Kind of Junket

My junkets have taken me to many faraway and exotic places. Earlier this year, I spent time in Jordan, Egypt and Israel. Sharing my thoughts, memories and photos about my Middle Eastern adventure helped me relive and learn even more from the experience. An unforgetable pyramid,

noteworthy smells and tastes,

and ancient ruins

made their way into the blog. And if you have been with me since I started blogging, you might remember these bubbles breezin’ in Rome.

You might be surprised, but my current adventure is keeping me close to home. Yup….. no packing, passport or plane; taxis or transports totally unnecessary; museums and monuments have no role. Instead, I am embarked on a personal journey meant to change the old me into a new, improved and stronger version of the Jackie you have come to know. You see, while I seemed to be in charge while hanging out at Wadi Rum in Jordan…. or

managing luggage at the Basel train station in Switzerland…

or seeking the California sun with my Traveling Companion

my left shoulder was attempting to be the boss of of me. Well, this beautiful shoulder finally

won the battle for power and insisted on medical attention. Extended physical therapy and three cortosone shots proved helpful, but did not represent a cure. Seeking a second opinion did very little to change the the first diagnosis…them bones …them bones…them bones…need replacing. Here’s one of my shoulder shots…see for yourself….what a mess.

One thing led to another, and I found myself on the way to the operating room. Here I am…with my mask. Feel free to enjoy the hospital art behind me. If I look anxious…well, I was, but

my nurse, Penny, did a lot to make me feel comfortable. I got to wear that really cool hospital gown that you see Penny holding. My sincere thanks to Penny as I am sure that taking care of me was not an easy task.

My surgeon, Dr. Ryan Miyamoto, started operating at 7:30 am, and seventy minutes later, Jackie Henry had a new shoulder. At 3:30 pm, Jackie’s new shoulder took her home for some much needed rest and a diet of tangerine ice pops. Let me introduce you to my bandaged shoulder which, currently, is not quite ready for primetime.

I must admit this junket is far more challenging than I anticipated, but I fully expect my new shoulder is going to take me far and wide. This particular junket is not an African Safari, but I hope to get there once my new shoulder pushes Covid 19 out of the way. Stay with me….tomorrow starts physical therapy. Here’s wishing you all health and mobility….Love, the Unseasoned Traveler.

    1. Melissa….thanks for reaching out….it is wonderful to hear from you….let me say that I am always delighted to see you and your boys on FB enjoying the great outdoors. I will take you up on those reading suggestions…I am attempting to keep up with my daily routines…exercise is a big part of the day… I manage to walk 2-3 miles a day, but the effort is so great that I get really tired. However, no pain at all. I am looking forward to the day I can comb my own hair. Stay healthy and mobile….fondly, jackie h

  8. Hi Jackie, Thanks so much for keeping us posted on the latest – but not greatest! – Junket! Rich and I surely wish you a good recovery – I purposely didn’t write “Speedy” because I do understand that the healing occurs over time, but not necessarily speedily!

I (Marian) too took advantage of our stay-at-home time and got a knee replacement in July. I laughed at your X-ray picture – I too took a photo of mine – before and after! I can walk, drive, do stairs, etc., but it still has a way of its own. The doctor said internal swelling can last for months. I have found great relief by wearing a knee “sleeve”. That allows me to enjoy our daily several mile walks.

We had one wonderful escape from smoky northern CA to the central CA wine country of Paso Robles, Los Olivos and Santa Barbara to do some tasting. It was all by reservation, masks when not tasting, distanced and all outdoors. We felt we were being prudent and fortunately none of us got sick. That has been our only travel since January.

We do sorely miss our visits with people, travels, concerts, theater, etc. We eagerly look forward to a vaccine that gives back the freedoms we had but didn’t realize how fragile they were. We do savor the time we have been able to travel. In our first two years of marriage, we counted up 27 trips – now we cheated a bit and counted separate city segments as we moved around! But we are thrilled to have those memories.

Our best wishes to you, Marian Devine and Rich Blish

    1. Marian and Rich…..a big HI to you…and thanks for the great letter…..you write wonder letters….I read this latest one several times….say, how is your knee, Marian? Knee replacement is a challenging surgery, but I know that you are a warrior and kicked the entire situation in the can. Since you listed the things you can do…which sounds like everything….it seems as though your recovery was fabulous. I am glad you did not use the adjective speedy…I am in it for the long term effects. Stay safe and healthy….and continue to drink wine…..fondly…j

    1. Hi, Donna…I got your wonderful email several days ago….it was so good I had to read it multiple times, and then I read it to my daughter. I love the power of the written word, and so I thank you for writing. So happy to hear that you and Bruce are well…along with your other family members. It is getting harder and harder to face what seems to be a country that is not moving in any direction that makes any sense. You will laugh when I tell you that in the two and a half weeks since my surgery I have seen every single episode of Little House and all the Rocky movies at least three times. I have not given up on travel, and I hope you hold some positive thoughts about your next trip…..I cannot tell you how glad I am that we met….my nurse has mostly been on vacation. In fact, last night he called in sick and went to bed early……you cannot get good help these days…..thinking of you warmly…jackie h.

  14. Jackie! Once again you show us that adventures – even those “close to home” – can help us “learn even more.” From your observations, insights and sharing you’ve help us all be “improved and stronger versions” of ourselves. We’re “with you.” Stay well; stay strong.
